Accommodations at St. Margaret's in Duxbury

Bertram Conference Center

Bertram Conference Center is an all year round, fully equipped Conference Center located on Harden Hill Road in South Duxbury. There is ample, off street parking right next to the conference center. It is a short walk down Harden Hill Road to Duxbury Bay and our private beach. Visitors who are staying in Bertram, the Farmhouse, and the Boathouse are welcome to use the beach! Behind Bertram, the ground slopes down to a marsh where there are many birds and wild flowers. There are several acres to walk through, with beautiful landscaping, the smell of the fresh salt air, a multitude of creatures to watch, including squirrels, birds and an entire flock of wild turkeys! The Center seems remote from civilization, but it is also a short walk to Hall's Corner, and a short drive to either Duxbury or Kingston, which have everything you might need. It is like having the best of both worlds!
Daytime Groups
Groups may use Bertram Conference Center for day use only OR for overnight stays ranging from one night to several weeks. There is a small group meeting space directly in front of you as you come in the front door that is very comfortable for 6 people. There is a fireplace and many bookcases, a coat rack, and track lighting. To both the left and to the right of this, there are very large meeting rooms that easily accomodates 50 - 75 people. Both could be used for meetings or one could be the dining area and one could be the meeting ares. There is also another small living room type area that could be used as a break out space for small groups. There is an easel available for your use, but we do not provide newsprint pads or markers. You would need to bring your own. There is an extensive library of books on all sorts of spiritual topics that may be used while you are visiting Bertram. In warm weather, there are two large porches, equipped with comfortable outdoor chairs, which can be used for meeting or relaxing and enjoying the surroundings. Visitors who are staying in Bertram are welcome to use the private beach at the end of Harden Hill Road.

Overnight Groups
Bertram Conference Center has ten bedrooms, with either single or bunk beds. Up to twenty people can be accomodated, if guests are willing to share rooms. All towels, pillows, linens and bedding materials are provided. There are laundry facilities in the basement. The overnight accomodations are ideal for youth groups of all ages as well as adults. Bertram is, however, not completely handicapped accessible as yet. Please inquire with the Reservations Desk if you have a particular need in regards to accessibility.
Meals
Groups are responsible for their own meals. They may bring their own prepared food with them, or they may use the fully equipped kitchen to prepare their own meals in our recently renovated kitchen. It has new cabinets and a full range of new appliances: dishwasher, microwave oven, conventional oven, coffee maker, etc. There is a "Foodies" grocery store very nearby in Hall's Corner, and a Hannaford's Supermarket and a Super Stop and Shop (a short drive away), where groceries can be purchased. For those who do not want to bring or to cook their own meals, catering is available by Duxbury Deli in Hall's Corner. This needs to be arranged with them in advance. There are also several very good local restaurants very nearby, including Duxbury Pizza and Tsang's Chinese Food.

The Boathouse

View of the Boathouse from Harden Hill Road

The Boat House at St. Margaret's Convent in South Duxbury is a unique place for vacation, retreat or rest time. The building is set in a grove of small oak trees and is probably the oldest building on the grounds. It was originally constructed as a place to manufacture and launch small boats, so the large barn doors are a right at the edge of our private beach leading to the bay. In the 1930's it was done over as an overnight camp for children. Now the building has been renovated once again for small families or individuals who are looking for a place to take summer vacation or just to get away from it all for a time. Rentals can be for a few days to several weeks. There is a small kitchen that can be used to prepare meals.

The parking lot for Bertram Conference Center is on your right and is clearly marked. Bertram Conference Center is right next to the parking lot. Across the street is the Duxbury Town Green, a large field with lush plantings, a flagpole and a memorial with benches. The first building on your left is the Chapel of the Sisters of St. Margaret.
