Joining Us - What Happens and When?
Entrance into Religious life is a gradual process of study
and discernment between the aspirant and the community. The
application process requires several visits of varying length to the
community. Those women accepted enter the Society as postulants.
After a postulancy of six months, they may become novices. The novitiate
is for two to three years, after which a novice makes an annual Profession
of vows. Life Profession may come after a further three to five years.
This is just the start of a lifetime of contemplative action and continuous
discernment of God's will for each Sister as she lives life in community
and in the world.

My Novitiate
When I arrived, I was bankrupt:
empty, nicotine-stained,
desperate, hungry and broke.
I had been robbed by those who loved me.
The vault held nothing sacred.
The bed you gave me was comfortable.
I hardly felt the stretching.
You smiled and I hoped.
Copper penny joy
clinked as it hit the floor
and echoed in my soul.
One by one,
the nickels came.
Prayer became my treasure.
I grew rich with coins of every size.
Celibacy became an asset,
Obedience, my wealth.
Who knew that poverty could hold so much?
Finally that time has come.
At profession, I ask
"Where now may I spend?"

Membership in the Community
Becoming a Sister of St. Margaret does not happen overnight,
and it is not for everybody. Our life can be difficult, and more come
to try our life than stay. Applicants should be free of obligation,
between the ages of 21 and 45, and a member of the Episcopal Church
for at least two years. If our way of living the Christian life sounds
interesting to you or you would like more information on life in our
community, please contact:

Are you a single woman between the ages of 21 and 45?
Are you ready to spend a weekend exploring this dynamic life? We welcome women
of faith, lay or ordained, who are searching for life in community with prayer
at its center. Vocations Weekends are held each year on Columbus Day weekend
(Friday to Sunday) and are offered at no cost. Room and board for the weekend
are included. Participants are responsible for transportation to and from the
convent. If you are unable to attend that weekend, feel free to contact us;
we would be happy to arrange for a visit at a more mutually convenient time.
This weekend is appropriate for women at all stages of exploration. Some are
simply curious, some may have felt a sense of "call" to this life, and some
may be drawn to something more. All are welcome. The 2010 Vocations Weekends will
be held on
Friday, October 8 through Sunday, October 10, 2010.
If you would like to apply for the Vocations Weekend, you can do it in two ways.
