Supporting the Sisters of St. Margaret

Financial Donations

There are many ways to donate money to the Sisters. All donations to the Sisters are tax-deductible. You can keep your cancelled check as your receipt, or you can request a tax form from our office staff by emailing ssmconvent@ssmbos.com. All checks should be made out to The Society of St. Margaret, which is our legal title. Some choose to make the Sisters the recipients of part of a tithe on a regular basis, either monthly, quarterly, or annually. Some people like to donate items to us, rather than money. An Associate donated a large quantity of Prayer Books to be put into all of the guest rooms in our facilities. There are always needs in all of our facilities, and if you would like to donate something but aren't sure what, contact us and ask! You can email us at ssmconvent@ssmbos.org or call us at 617-445-8961 x146.

Monetary donations may be sent to:
The Society of St. Margaret
17 Highland Park St.
Boston, MA 02119

You may donate from your checking account, savings account or
Visa or Mastercard.

There are many ways that you can assist the Sisters in their daily life and work, and not all of them are financial! There are donations of your talents to help the Sisters with skills they need but do not have among themselves. There are ways that you can help the Sisters by spreading the word about who they are and what they do. There are donations of your time to help the Sisters to accomplish tasks and projects that need a lot more hands than just that of the Sisters. And yes, there are ways that you can help us with your financial resources.

Volunteer Your Talents

Do you have a particular talent that might be useful to the Sisters? Do you design and maintain websites? Do you love to do jobs like mailings and labeling that take concentration and focus? Do you have a passion for photography? Are you a genius at knitting, sewing, typing, gardening, housework, cooking, or baking? If you have time and talents that might be useful to the Sisters, let us know! Contact us at and tell us who you are and what you can do. We will see if your passions and abilities are a match with any of our needs. And if you don't see your particular talent mentioned, that doesn't mean we don't need it. It just means we haven't thought of it yet! You can reach us by emailing us at info@ssmbos.com or calling us at 617-445-8961 x146.

Volunteer Your Time

Are you retired? Do have free time that you don't know what to do with? The Sisters are always in need of volunteers to help out! We need a receptionist on the weekends to answer the phones and put people into our voicemail. Are you available to drive Sisters to medical appointments during the week? We need help with labeling and mailing the Quarterly, with filing and organizing, with visiting our Sisters in nursing homes in West Roxbury and in Duxbury, and a myriad of other things. Let us know if you have time and want to help, and I can assure you that we can find something for you to do! You can reach us be emailing us at info@ssmbos.com calling us at 617-445-8961 x146.

Tell People About Us

It is said that "Religious Orders are the best kept secret in the Episcopal Church!" We believe that this is true and we could use your help to change that! Here are a few ways that you can help if you have a home parish:

Talk to your parish priest and tell them about us. Sisters can preach at services, either on Sunday or during the week or on weeknights. Sisters can lead Quiet Days, prayer groups or teach programs on prayer, lead adult education classes on a variety of topics, can speak to your parishioners at Potluck Suppers, etc. about the Religious Life in general and the Sisters of St. Margaret in particular, or can speak about our work in Haiti. We love to talk to ECW groups, Senior high youth groups, and groups of college students! So if you have a group that might like to know about us, email us at You can reach us be emailing us at Information or calling us at 617-445-8961 x146.

Talk to your Mission Outreach Committee and ask them if they want to learn more about the Sisters of St. Margaret. Our work throughout the Episcopal Church, in the communities in which we live, and our work in Haiti are all possible beneficiaries of mission funds. A number of churches make annual gifts to the Sisters out of their mission outreach budgets and your church can do that, too! The Mission Outreach Committee can reach us by emailing us at Information or calling us at 617-445-8961 x146.

Sr. Claire Marie runs the Haitian Gift Shop in Boston

Consider giving the Sisters a table at your annual Christmas Fair, Summer Fair, or Bazaar. The Holy Trinity Craft/Gift Shop provides some funds for scholarship aid and some income for the workers. Sister Claire Marie is in charge of an outlet for the Gift Shop at the Convent in Boston and many things can be ordered through her. It is also possible to take the Haitian Craft/Gift Shop to church fairs and bazaars. Contact
Sr. Claire Marie at 617-445-8961 x230 if you can give us a table at your church fair! The money that is raised goes to Holy Trinity School. By inviting Sr. Claire Marie or another Sister to have a table, you give us an opportunity to make some money for a very important cause, and it costs you nothing but a little space at your fair! Call Sr. Claire Marie at 617-445-8961 x230.

The Sisters in Haiti direct the Church Linens Project. They buy pure imported linen from Belgium, and teach local Haitian women to hand-embroider and hand-hem purificators, corporals, and larger linens. These can be shipped to parishes in the USA and Canada. This is a source of income for the Sisters and for the women who help them. A brochure with designs and prices is available upon request by calling Sr. Claire Marie at 617-445-8961 x230.

The Haitian Appeal

Each year in the Advent issue of the St. Margaret's Quarterly, we appeal for funds to help the Sisters in Haiti. We include an envelope for donations to be sent for our sisters in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The Sisters are in need of funds for travel expenses, living expenses, medical expenses and supplies. Any contribution you could make to the Haitian appeal is used directly for the support of the Sisters in Haiti, and is tax-deductible. There is a place to include your confidential requests for prayers by the Sisters for yourself or for others.

Remembering the Sisters of St. Margaret in Your Will

Have you ever considered including the Sisters of St. Margaret in your will? When you create a will, you have the ability to determine how your assets are distributed at your death to the individuals and charitable organizations of your choice. And, including a bequest in your will to the Sisters of St. Margaret may be the best way to make a meaningful gift and save specific assets, such as property, securities or real estate, in case you or your family members need them in the future.

Charitable bequests to the Sisters of St. Margaret offer some of the following advantages:

  • They are very easy!

Making a bequest is as simple as inserting a few sentences into your will, such as, "I give $XXXXX to The Society of St. Margaret." The Society of St. Margaret is our legal title.

  • They are revocable.

Wills are not written in stone and can be changed at any time. Because relationships and circumstances evolve over time, your will should naturally do the same. With a bequest, you are not actually making a gift until your death. Until then, you are free to alter your plans, eliminating the worry that you might make a commitment you could later regret.

  • They have tax benefits.

Aside from the pure joy achieved by leaving meaningful gifts to others, making a bequest to the Sisters of St. Margaret has valuable tax benefits. Your estate is entitled to an unlimited estate tax charitable deduction for bequests to qualified charitable organizations.

Why Might You Want to Make a Bequest to the Sisters of St. Margaret?

The reasons that donors make charitable bequests are generally as varied as the donors themselves, and they cover a wide range of personal and philanthropic goals. Perhaps the one common denominator is a sincere desire to give back to the community or to a particular charitable organization, with some of the other most notable reasons being:

  • Belief in the Sisters of St. Margaret:

"The values you espouse are values I want to see perpetuated in our society," a donor said in a letter. "I like your objectives, and I applaud the fact that you do not waste money in achieving them. I want to continue to support your mission."

  • Ability to make changes:

"I like the income tax break I get on my annual gifts to you and have always wanted to do more, but I like my 'cushion,'" another donor said. "You never know what might happen. I might need that money someday. This way, if I need it, I can use it. I can change my mind about my will at any time. If everything goes as planned, however, that money will go to support your work."

  • Creating a personal legacy:

"By making a charitable bequest to the Sisters of St. Margaret, I know that I am doing something for those who come after me, and it is a good feeling," a donor said. "Thank you for showing me how to support a cause that I value--and for letting me do it my way."

Please consult your attorney, financial advisor and tax preparer before you make any decisions about your estate.
