We need your Help in Haiti!

In 1927 the sisters of St. Margaret went to Haiti at the invitation of the Bishop of Haiti, Bishop Harry Roberts Carson. Shortly after arriving they took over a very small school Holy Trinity School on the grounds of Holy Trinity Cathedral. The school, Holy Trinity School, was directed by the sisters until the 1993 death of Sr. Anne Marie. During the years the Holy Trinity School expanded to include a music school, a philharmonic orchestra, a trade school and craft shop.

In 1944, Sr. Joan Margaret established Ecole St. Vincent for handicapped children. This includes the school, a physical therapy program, a Brace and Prostethics clinic and a clinic. Sr. Joan administered the continuously expanding school for 49 years until her retirement in 1993. This school presently serves over 1000 children a month.

In 1993 these educational institutions were turned over to the Haitian people and are under the direction of Bishop J. Zachee Duracin, the present Bishop of Haiti. The sisters continue to teach religion and confirmation classes in the two schools in Port-au-Prince, and in the country village and town of Matheiu Leogane. The sisters run a very active scholarship program to help the children whose families cannot afford the tuition for the schools both in the city schools and in the country schools.

In 1962 the sisters established the Foyer Notre Dame, a home for indigent elderly people who are alone. These persons have no home, no support, and cannot take care of themselves. There are many of these people in Haiti, as there is no government assistance for the aged. Sr. Marie Margaret is the director of the home. The Foyer presently houses eight women, and a new wing is almost finished that will allow housing for 10 additional men and women. The community would very much like to continue to expand this home in order to house more people. There is a very long waiting list for beds in the home.
