Who We Are
What is the Society of St. Margaret?
The Society of St. Margaret is an Episcopal religious community of women seeking to find Jesus present in worship, in the common life, and in ministries which concentrate on responding to the needs of the times.
Founded in East Grinstead, Sussex, England by the Reverend John Mason Neale in 1855, the Sisters' first work was nursing the rural poor in their own homes. The American Convent was established in 1873 and the first work in the USA was the administration of Children's Hospital in Boston.
Today our mission carries us far beyond these early beginnings. We find many institutions such as schools, prisons, shelters, hospitals, feeding programs and the Church to be places of service. Through our ministry of hospitality we welcome into the houses of our community individuals and groups seeking space and a prayerful environment for spiritual refreshment, focused planning and work, and a time away for retreat.
Our life is one of commitment to community and mission. Our commitment is expressed through the vows of poverty, celibate chastity and obedience. Sisters of the Society also make a fourth vow, that of charity, which calls us to see Jesus in all with whom we live and work. We order our day with regular gatherings of the community for the celebration of the Eucharist and the fourfold Daily Office from the Book of Common Prayer. Worship at the Table of the Lord leads us to share at the table of the common life and sends us out in service to the world around us.
Our life is energized and sustained by this regular rhythm of prayer and worship, community and mission. Members of the community also have time and opportunity each day for personal prayer in addition to liturgical worship.
Along with the Sisters of the community, we are blessed with a large group of Associates, both women and men, who are united with us in a common bond of spirituality and service. We welcome you to visit and to explore with us the possibility of a vocation as a Sister or as an Associate.
